weather
Lighting(time of day)
Health and safety

What time period do you think the photograph was taken? Give reasons for your answer.

Late 1970's-early 1980's I think this because of the saturation of the color on the camera, Quality of photography, the train because it's not safe now, Fashion style.

What do you think was the genre/subject?
Holiday advertisement showing that if you go to Butlin's you'll be happy,Family holiday. Holidays

Are the elements in the shot balanced?
The Monorail in the back ground and the pool, he focuses more on the pool so it focuses on the people who are happy. He would also have to consider when the trains where going to be and had to time it so he could take a picture as the trains cost.

What message could the photograph be trying to convey?
Happiness and having fun with the family. Portraying fun, trying to give an overall idea that Butlin's is fun and that people should go.

Do you notice anything striking about the shot?
The line of people on the other side of the

Do you think consent was needed from the subjects?
They wouldn't need consent from the people because it was different back then they weren't worried about half the stuff we are now, He has also been hired by the company so he has all rights to take the pictures and use them.

What is the viewpoint?
Eye level

If you were to produce this shot what would you do differently?
different angle, birds eye view, straight on to get above you would use a ladder of somewhere high to get a angled view.

This a modern day representation of a 40's to 50's style picture of film noir I know this because it looks higher resolution and in my research it told me it was a representation of a 40's-50's.
The photo shows foreshadowing for what could happen to him I  can tell this because of how he is positioned behind the blinds, with the blinds representing bars of prison or entrapment  because they are cornered.
The unique features of this are how the one side of his face is lit up and the rest is submerged in darkness and how the light is also helping with making the smoke stand out as well

I would recreate this image by placing a person behind a set of blinds and positioning them to be in a similar position,With the lighting I would put a light to the side of the face to highlight that side of the face.

The time period I think this photo was taken in them 40's -50's , I think this because of her hairstyle, clothing and the street light. She also has the classic Hollywood starlet look. The picture's message could be trying to say she is a lady of the night because it is a stereotypical image of a lone woman on a dark corner, It also could suggest that she was waiting for someone or something. It's unique features are that it is a crisp monochrome and would probably have been shot on black and white film, where as today's images tend to be shot in full colour and then desaturated to make it grey scale. I would replicate this image by finding a quite and old street with a old looking lamp post at night so the lamp post is on, I would then have a well dressed woman in Vintage clothing and have her stand underneath the lamp post. For the lighting I would use the light from the lamp post which lights the top of her face, another light coming from the left side to cast the light on the side of her face and cast the shadow of the lamp post onto the wall behind, and I could also use a up lighter to illuminate the wall to make the outline of the lamp stand out.

I think the time period this was taken in was the 40's-50's , I think this by the way the silhouette's are dressed e.g the suit and hat the man is wearing. The image could be showing an unexpected arrival for the two characters, possibly confrontational because I think there is a headlight to a car that might of arrived. The unique features of this picture is that it is heavily back lit causing the background to be illuminated and the characters to be in sharp silhouette. I would recreate this picture by using a Fog machine to add the fog in the background, the place the photo would be shot at the end of a ally way where it opens up, The lighting would be strong lighting(Car head lights) Coming from the other side to light up the fog and turn the characters into silhouette.

Questions to answer for each picture
40's to 50's because of the hair style and the clothing the woman is wearing.
What message could the photograph be trying to convey?
What are the unique features that make the image different from current day photographs?
Write a paragraph detailing how you would recreate the image. Include the props, lighting, location and post production editing processes you may use.

The time period this was taken in is the 30's to 40's The reason I think this is because of the Fedora and the popped collar giving the gangsta look. The message this picture is portraying is mystery and menace because we can not see the face it's all blacked out. The unique features for this image is how the face is shrouded in darkness and how we can not see it leaving mystery behind who it is. I would recreate this by putting a person in a trench coat or a mackintosh with the collar flipped up and a fedora, the lighting I would have two lights behind the person slightly wider then the shoulder width pointing downwards at a 45 degrees so it highlights the lining of the subject while the face is still concealed and facing the side. I would position the camera so it would focus on the shoulders upwards.

Evaluation: posters and DVD cover

The genre film Noir is dark and depressing, usually portrayed as old detective films or Gangsta films like gun for hire, or films like Sin city which is Film Noir but also has certain areas colored like a woman's lips if they have red lipstick on. The time period film Noir is based in is the 1940's-1950's. The origins of film Noir started because of the Prohibition in America(not allowing alcohol) This is where the Gangsta's game in and supplied Alcohol illegals to people to make profit. The clothing usually portrayed in film Noir  are three piece suits (shirt, Waistcoat, Jacket),Fedoras, ties, and shiny shoes, They would also most likely have slicked back hair, guns, cigars, and pocket watches.

The photos that inspired me where screen shots from movies, and peoples work that had been entered into competitions, I looked at all sought of  pictures like some one looking through blinds or a an who's face was mostly shadows and holding a gun. I choose these because they looked creative and looked like I could recreate them.

The key light is the brightest and most dominate light of a setup hence why it is called the Key light, helping the key light is the Fill light which is usually placed on the opposite side of the key light to fill in the shadows left by the key light. The last one is the back light which leaves an outline around the back ground. Key and Back lights are the most  important.

Gobos, short for go before optics,These are cutouts which are made of  metal or glass that can go inside a light fixture between the light source and the lens. These are used to cast a perfectly crisp shadow but require specialized lights that have projection lenses.

Cookies, also known  as Cucoloris are cutouts of wood, metal, plastic, or anything that cast a patterned shadow e.g. a  blind pattern. Cookies go between the light fixture and the subject.

My Ideas and Photos where all taken at home in the study which has a film Noir feel to it in certain parts of the room, and the near the staircase banisters. The first picture I took was a close up on my models face that was wearing a Fedora, trench coat with it's collar popped and a a cigar in their mouth (near the staircase), The second picture was a shot of my models full body and showing him pretend to  light the cigar in his mouth so we could catch the smoke emitted from the match to put more detail in the picture. My third picture was a picture of a Fedora with a toy gun underneath it propping it up and a pocket watch in front of it, I made a cookie to put on the light so it would have a shutter effect, My fourth and final picture was of my model sat on a chair with his legs on the table, a glass of whiskey(cold tea) in hand, a gun in their other hand, an old fan, A cigar,  case notes, and a empty bottle of whiskey on the desk, My model was wearing a shirt and waist coat with trousers, Fedora and shiny shoes.

The location of my picture where all at my house, some in the study, and some at the banisters for my stairs. The times weren't a problem we made sure the pictures where taken at night so there was wasn't much natural light to interfere and through the lighting off. The props we used I had at home which where the toy gun, pocket watch, fedora, the only things we had to buy where the whisky bottle. and we made the cigars by rolling paper up. The model was my older brother so we had to work round his work and college schedule which wasn't to hard because he goes to college mostly in the morning and he doesn't work Thursdays so we took the photos on Thursday. The equipment we used was my camera and a LED light and tripod from Grantham college that they let my dad borrow to help with the project.

I took multiple shots from each angle of the area I was in to see what looked like and also adjust the lighting of the LED light  that I was using to get shadows, I also experimented with and without cookies to see what it looked like. The ones that had more detail, and weren't to dark or to bright from the lighting adjustments I kept, out of all the all the pictures of the fedora shot I only managed to get one that showed the cookie in effect.

I did all my editing at home using Picasa to turn the pictures black and white and adjust the settings to make it look more old and grainy,In one picture I turned all black and white except for the whisky in my models had which retained it's color to stand out.

I don't feel like it need's improving I like Them for what they are, the only thing I think I could improve would be the lighting. I learn't about different lighting techniques, and about cookies, and Gobos.

My final products stuck almost to a T on my proposal,I had to change the one that was meant to be outside because of how windy and cold it was, so we changed that to be inside and a bit closer up.

UAL evaluation

We had to shoot an object against a white background and choose an orientation that would suit the object. Me, Leah, and Sherri decided to take both landscape and portrait of my pocket watch so we could compare and see witch one was better. We decided that one of the portrait picture of the Pocket watch would be better. I had the job of adjusting the picture, so I adjusted the levels and the curves to help get rid of the shadow.

We also had to take two shots of the front of the Adams building one landscape and one portrait.
Leah adjusted the portrait picture by cropping the shot and turning it black and white.

Sherri adjusted the Landscape picture of the front of the Adams building and edited by cropping the picture and turned it Black and White.

Contact Sheet

The first three photos are of the first shoot that is meant to represent darkness and mystery. I adjusted the lighting  on each take of a photo to get different depths of darkness

The last photo on the first contact sheet and the First three of the Second contact sheet are the second shoot, which is also meant to show mystery. I took these photos from different angles with different lighting The first one I just used the LED Light normally. The second one the lighting went a pit darker. The third one is meant to look like a lamp post leaning over the model but it didn't look quite right. I did the same with the last one put darkened the light.
